Bringing solar energy to remote hospitals, clinics, orphanages, schools, and more.

Giving energy security and hope.

Our Story

We currently have over 80 not-for-profit solar systems operating in Liberia, Africa, many of which are community clinics managed by the Ministry of Health. Our fleet also comprises multiple hospitals, orphanages, schools, missionary residences, and other facilities. These systems provide power in areas where the electrical grid does not exist, supplying hospitals with crucial off-grid electricity to operate laboratories and other vital operating areas of the hospitals: OR/ER/ICU/CCU/NICU facilities.

It all started in 2007 when Charles “Chip” Pickering traveled several times to Phebe Hospital in Bong County, Liberia with Engineering Ministries International to restore power to the facility and plan for a water system upgrade. Upon the completion of the project and installation of new generators, the Liberian Minister of Health, Dr. Gwenigale, and his assistant, Mr. William Martin, asked him to develop a solar program for lighting, power, and vaccination refrigeration for their remote clinics.

The clinics offer primary care, immunizations, vaccinations, emergency rooms and delivery of new babies in these extremely rural communities. Our systems provide power for live culture vaccinations and immunizations, lighting for the emergency and delivery services at night, and power for computers and communications at these sites. Staffed with a Physician’s Assistant and sometimes a midwife, these may be the only clinics for the communities that do not have serviceable roads or the availability of ambulance services.

We began in 2009 with 19 donated refrigerators and two solar systems and started training hospital maintenance workers on how to install, operate, and maintain PV systems. Since that time, we’ve developed a standardized installation package for basic clinics which is expandable as they move to 24 hour operations, pump water, introduce maternity services, and begin operating laboratories.

In 2014, partnering with Robert Peirce, Brother’s Brother Foundation, and Partner Liberia, we began installing solar systems for orphanages and schools within Liberia in addition to clinics. We also started focusing on the sustainability of our systems by implementing training, providing spare parts, and planning for battery upgrades and other preventative maintenance.

The cost of operating hospital generators and other critical care areas is becoming increasingly difficult for the Ministry of Health (MOH) to fund. Thus, we have begun offering larger solar systems to hospitals throughout Liberia in order to pick up the critical loads such as ER, OR, ICU, CCU, and laboratory areas, some of which require conditioned air and higher quality and more reliable power.

We operate our Africa program as a not-for-profit program of giving back. We pay our own travel expenses, support educational programs for our team and strive to be good stewards of the donated dollars to our program.
